2011 Award Winners

NSW Chinese community leaders have been recognised for their volunteer work, community service and achievement at an official ceremony at NSW Government House on the 8th of February 2011.



 

Quong Tart Lifetime Achievement Award in Community Service

Dr Leng Tan

Dr Leng TanDr Leng Tan is recognised for her enormous efforts to improve the wellbeing of the Chinese community in NSW and beyond. For more than 40 years, Dr Tan has devoted her time and skills to help children, the elderly and people with disabilities. She is also committed to promoting understanding of Chinese culture in the wider Australian community.

Dr Tan was the founding Board Member and is the current Chairperson of the Chinese Australian Services Society (CASS) and has served on the Sydney City Council Chinese New Year Celebration Committee and on the Immigration Tribunal.  Currently she is a voluntary medical team member for the “Eye on China” program.

Dr Tan has been instrumental in establishing an aged-care hostel for Chinese elderly people and in transforming CASS into a multi-service organisation that helps over 1,800 families per week. Dr Tan was also honoured in 2008 with a NSW Outstanding Women’s Services Award.

Mrs. Clarie Lee JPMrs. Clarie Lee is recognised for her continuous and tireless service to the Hills Chinese Women’s Association. Clarie has served on the Executive Management Committee for 17 years and as Chairperson for 10 years.

Under Clarie’s leadership and active participation, the Association established the Hills Chinese Community Visiting Team. The team was trained to visit the large population of non-English speaking Chinese elderly women living at home, hospitals, nursing homes and retirement villages.

Ms Daphne Lowe Kelley is recognised for her community service spanning more than 30 years in the wider Australian community

Daphne is acknowledged for the breadth of experience and commitment she brings to the many and varied roles she has undertaken, including serving on local Chinese, Australian and professional organisations and Councils. Daphne is the founding member and current Chairperson of the Chinese Heritage Association of Australia and has provided a forum for Australians of Chinese ancestry to present their research into family histories.

Young Chinese Volunteer Award

Mr William Ho Yin Chan

Mr William Ho Yin Chan

William Ho Yin Chan is recognised for the dedication, passion and selfless community service he provides across a wide variety of projects. William is long time supporter of World Vision and has continued to raise funds for the organisation since his school days and throughout his time at university.

William’s dedication is evident through his voluntary role as NSW Group Director of World Vision’s youth movement, Vision Generation since 2009.

Mr. Alex Ma of 1A Communications has designed and supervised the production of the traditional trophies since the very first awards in 2005. The concept for the traditional Chinese trophies was researched and developed by Alex.

He has also lent his design and communications expertise to assist with the staging of these awards and, in particular, for his production of the bilingual winners’ brochure describing the achievements of the four winners.
