Community Relations Commission and Community Harmony Strengthened through Review
On 22 June 2010 the NSW Parliament passed amendments to the Community Relations Commission and Principles of Multiculturalism Act 2000 reinforcing the Community Relations Commission as the key NSW Government agency delivering social cohesion programs in the state.
The amendments strengthen the functions of the Commission by introducing new provisions into the Act in order to better facilitate the Commission achieving its objectives. The changes clearly articulate as a function of the Commission, the undertaking of proactive strategies and research relating to community harmony.
These changes affirm the ongoing work of the Commission, better facilitating its policy objectives, while strengthening the Principles of Multiculturalism that have become a cornerstone of community harmony and cultural diversity programs in NSW.
The legislation passed through the NSW Parliament with the Attorney General issuing a public statement. View the media release.

New Quarterly Forums
The Community Relations Commission has begun a series of quarterly forums for senior officers, managers and coordinators of multicultural programs and services in NSW government agencies.
Two well-attended forums, which featured informative presentations and lively discussions, have been held to so far this year (on 16 March and 15 June 2010), and have provided excellent opportunities to agencies for networking and exchanging ideas.
The forums are an initiative of the Commission, to support the introduction (from 2009) of the Multicultural Policies and Services Program and the associated Multicultural Planning Framework, which have been developed to assist agencies to fulfil their responsibility to implement the Principles of Multiculturalism.
At the June forum, there was a very informative presentation by the Department of Education and Training, on the complex issue of data collection and analysis. This led to a lively discussion on what data is necessary, appropriate, and when and how it should be collected. As an outcome, the Commission was requested to “map” data collection practices currently used within the public sector, with a view to possibly identifying appropriate minimum data sets for the various categories of agencies.
